In collaboration with Arab Image Foundation this two-day workshop taught participants how to encounter a historical image, how to research the context of the image through attention to gender, class, and social hierarchies, what research methodologies to use and how to narrate the story behind the image.
The workshop consists of four main sessions over two days, followed by a month of group work on a research project. In addition to the Arab Image Foundation, who provided the archival images and familiarized the participants with the ways of archiving and preserving the historical material, KW worked with feminist historian Sana Tannoury Karam to ground the workshop in a feminist framework for reading and researching the images; KW also partnered with a local writer and performance artist Hashem Hashem to guide participants into how to creatively turn the research material from the archive into creative and captivating story that a wider audience can engage with. Participants also worked as teams on their projects, to research historical images and therefore a part of Lebanon’s history, and presented their work at a follow-up session in December 2025.
